Astronom Cari Alien di 86 Planet Mirip Bumi
86 planet tersebut disaring dari total 1.235 planet yang berpotensi menyimpan kehidupan.
VIVAnews - Pencarian terhadap tanda-tanda kehidupan asing di 86 planet serupa Bumi dimulai. Misi pencarian yang dilakukan itu merupakan bagian dari proyek SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) yang diluncurkan pertengahan 1980-an.
Pencarian dimungkinkan dengan bantuan Green Bank Telescope, sebuah teleskop radio berukuran raksasa yang dipasang di kawasan terpencil di West Virginia, Amerika Serikat.
Parabola raksasa itu akan menghadap ke setiap 86 planet yang disaring dari total 1.235 planet yang berpotensi menyimpan kehidupan, yang teridentifikasi oleh teleskop luar angkasa Kepler milik NASA. Setiap planet akan diamati selama 24 jam untuk mendapatkan datanya.
“Kami tidak bisa memastikan bahwa seluruh bintang yang ditemukan memiliki sistem planet yang bisa dihuni, namun bintang-bintang ini merupakan tempat terbaik untuk mencari kehidupan di lain luar angkasa,” kata Andrew Siemion, peneliti dari University of California at Berkeley, seperti dikutip dari Cosmosmagazine, 16 Mei 2011.
Bulan lalu, SETI Institute mengumumkan bahwa mereka menutup upaya penting mereka dalam mencari alien - yakni sebuah proyek senilai 50 juta dolar AS yang terdiri dari 42 teleskop parabola yang dikenal dengan Allen Telescope Array - akibat kekurangan dana sebesar 5 juta dolar AS.
Dengan dibekukannya parabola ATA, astronom berharap bahwa Green Bank Telescope canggih yang sempat mengalami gangguan saat terjadi badai pada tahun 1988 lalu akan menyediakan informasi spesifik seputar planet yang berpotensi mendukung kehidupan.
Permukaan teleskop Green Bank yang berukuran 100 kali 110 meter memungkinkannya merekam data hingga hampir 1Gb per detik. Teleskop seberat 7,7 juta kilogram yang mulai beroperasi sejak tahun 2000 itu merupakan proyek yang dikembangkan oleh National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
Dan Werthimer, fisikawan yang juga terlibat dalam penelitan menyebutkan, pihaknya memilih planet-planet yang memiliki temperatur tertentu yakni antara 0 sampai 100 derajat Celcius. Alasannya adalah karena planet bersuhu tersebut lebih berpotensi menyimpan kehidupan.
Werthimer sendiri telah memimpin proyek SETI yang sudah berusia 3 dekade dari Puerto Rico, tempat di mana Arecibo, teleskop radio terbesar di dunia berada. Namun demikian, Werthimer menyebutkan, proyek itu tidak bisa mengamati kawasan langit utara yang sama seperti yang diamati oleh teleskop Green Bank.
“Dengan Arecibo, fokus kami adalah memantau bintang yang serupa dengan Matahari kita. Harapannya adalah mereka memiliki planet di sekitarnya yang memancarkan sinyal intelijen,” kata Werthimer. “Namun demikian, kami belum pernah memiliki daftar planet seperti ini sebelumnya,” ucapnya.
Green Bank Telescope, kata Werthimer, mampu memindai jangkauan frekuensi hingga 300 kali lipat kemampuan Arecibo. Artinya, dalam satu hari ia bisa mengumpulkan data dengan jumlah yang sama yang dilakukan oleh Arecibo dalam waktu satu tahun.
Peneliti memperkirakan, proyek pencarian ini kemungkinan akan memakan waktu satu tahun. Pada pelaksanaannya, proyek ini juga akan dibantu oleh sekitar 1 juta orang astronom rumahan yang tergabung dalam SETI@home yang membantu memproses data yang didapat menggunakan komputer pribadi mereka.
